ELIGIBILITY

 

Q. Is the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) score considered for the NID entrance test?
A. No the NATA score is not considered for the NID entrance test. All applicants will have to undergo the Design Aptitude Test (DAT)

Q. Does NID consider IGCSE-Grade-12 as a valid pre-requisite?
A. Please refer to Section 4 on eligibility criteria (for B.Des.) in the Information Booklet available online at http://admissions.nid.edu.

A. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects meets the eligibility criteria mentioned in Section 4 of the Information Booklet available online at http://admissions.nid.edu.
Q. I am doing a 3 year Diploma course after 10th. Am I eligible for the UG course?
A. Candidates applying for B.Des. should have passed or are appearing for the qualifying examinations under the higher secondary (10+2) from any recognized Board of Education such as AISSCE/IB/ICSE, or equivalents, during the academic year 2015-16.

Q. If the applicant is enrolled with the NIOS (National Institute of Open School) for 10+2 schooling, are they eligible to apply to NID?
A. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects, meets the eligibility criteria as mentioned in Section 4.

Q. What is the admission procedure for NID?
A. The process of admission to NID for B.Des. and M.Des. programmes consists of three stages. Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Stage 2: Studio Test Stage 3: Personal Interview

Q. What is the entry requirement for M.Des. courses?
A. There are 19 different specializations under Master of Design (M.Des.) at three campuses of NID> Please refer to eligibility criteria for M. Des. As per Section 6 in the Information Booklet available online at http://admissions.nid.edu.

Q. How can I apply and where will I find the application form?
A. You can apply online only at http://admissions.nid.edu Please refer to the section 11 on How to Apply in the Information Booklet available online at http://admissions.nid.edu

Q. How will I get the Admit Card or Hall Ticket for my exams?
A. The Hall Tickets will be available online only at http://admissions.nid.edu for DAT for all candidates.

Q. What documents do I need to submit during the online application process?
A. Candidates are not required to submit any documents during the online application process. However the passport size photograph and signature needs to be uploaded.

Q. Where do I send the form?
A. Applications have to be filled online only. You can pay the fees online through credit card/debit card, and take a print to keep for your reference. Only candidates paying fees by Demand Draft are required to send a printed version of their application form to the address below:

Q. How should I complete the online application form?
A. The online application form has clear instructions where required, to guide applicants during the process.

Q. Should I send photocopies of my certificates & awards?
A. No documents are required during the online application process.

Q. How do I submit late documents to NID?
A. Documents are submitted in person once the selection is done. If the selected candidates do not pay the fees or fail to produce valid documents on the day of registration, or decline their offer of admission, their application will stand cancelled

Q. When and how will I receive intimation of selection and admission decision?
A. All information will be available online only on the Official NID Admissions site at http://admissions.nid.edu. Please keep on referring to this website for regular updates.

Q. Are interviews conducted on campus?
A. The Interviews for B.Des will be conducted at Ahmedabad and for M.Des. at the respective campus as per details mentioned in section 9 of the Admissions Information Booklet on the website http://admissions.nid.edu.

DESIGN APTITUDE TEST

Q. What is the DAT for?
A. The objective of the admission process is to seek evidence of the perception, attitude, aptitude, achievement and motivation essential in a potential design student. There are 3 stages for the DAT – Stage 1 (DAT or Entrance Test), Stage 2 (Studio Test) & Stage 3 (Personal Interview).

Q. Which are the test centres?
A. Design Aptitude Test (stage 1) for all applicants will be conducted in the following cities in India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada. However, Candidates applying in the Overseas category (supernumerary seats) applying for either B.Des or M.Des. will have to appear for their DAT, followed by Stage 2 and Stage 3 exams, in Ahmedabad only.

Q. What is the Studio Test? How important is it?
A. Based on the scores obtained in DAT (Stage 1), candidates will be shortlisted and called for the Studio Test (Stage 2), followed by Personal Interviews (Stage 3). The final merit list will be generated, based on the sum total of the weighted scores obtained by the candidate in each stage of the admissions process.

Q. What are the main objectives of the admission process?
A. The objective of the admission process is to seek evidence of the perception, attitude, aptitude, achievement and motivation essential in a potential design student. There are 3 stages of the admissions process. Stage one is the Design Aptitude Test, based on the scores obtained in DAT (Stage 1), candidates will be shortlisted and called for the Studio Test (Stage 2) and Personal Interviews (Stage 3). All the 3 stages are mandatory.

Q. Can we choose the exam centre?
A. Candidates may select a test centre of their choice at the time of submitting their application online. However, NID reserves the right to add/remove any of these centres and allot a test centre that may not be of the candidate’s choice. However, Candidates applying in the Overseas category (supernumerary seats) applying for either B.Des or M.Des. will have to appear for their DAT in Ahmedabad centre only.

Q. Where will I get my Hall Ticket from?
A. The hall Tickets will be available only on the official Admissions website of NID: http://admissions.nid.edu. It is the candidates’ responsibility to download and print the relevant Hall ticket.

Q. Is the Design Aptitude Test the same for Overseas applicants as well as Indian applicants?
A. Yes, the Design Aptitude Test is common for all applicants in undergraduate (B.Des.). The Design Aptitude Test for Postgraduate (M.Des.) applicants is different.

Q. Can I avoid the DAT?
A. No, it is mandatory for every applicant to appear for the Design Aptitude Test.

Q. Is there any waiver for the DAT?
A. No, there is no waiver for the DAT.

Q. What if I am staying abroad and can’t appear for the DAT?
A. It is mandatory for all applicants, including those staying abroad, to appear for the DAT.

Q. Is it possible for NID to conduct the entire DAT procedure in a day for overseas students?
A. Candidates applying in the Overseas category (supernumerary seats) applying for either B.Des or M.Des. will have to appear for their DAT, followed by Stage 2 and Stage 3 exams, in Ahmedabad only.

Q. May I apply to NID more than once?
A. Yes, candidates are allowed to appear for NID’s entrance exam for an unlimited number of attempts provided the eligibility criteria of age is fulfilled

Q. Is there any other test which can work as a substitute for DAT?
A. There is no other test which works as a substitute for DAT.

Q. How do I clear the DAT, is there any specific area I need to focus on?
A. There will be ONE question paper of 3 hours duration. The question paper will carry a total of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of both objective and subjective type questions.

FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIPS

Q. Which banks have a tie-up with NID for financial aid to provide education loans?
A. NID does not have a tie-up with any Banks. Candidates will have to approach Banks directly, for any kind of financial aid/educational loans

Q. Are there any scholarships available?
A. NID provides a limited number of scholarships to financially deserving candidates. Further information on scholarships can be obtained after successful admission to NID.

Q. Is an international student eligible to apply for financial aid from India?
A. Foreign students will have to seek financial aid from their country of residence/domicile.

FEES

Q. What are the tuition fees for B.Des & M.Des programmes?
A. The annual tuition fees for B.Des. are Rs. 1, 20,000/- and tuition fees for M.Des are Rs.1, 50,000/- yearly. Overseas fees are $5000 & $12,000 depending on the country of domicile/residence.

Q. What are the application fees at NID?
A. The application fees is different for applicants in general category and reserved categories for Indian nationals and applicants under Overseas Categories. Please refer to section 11 of the NID Admissions 2016-17 Information Booklet on the website admissions.nid.edu

ACCOMODATION

Q. Does NID provide hostel facilities?
A. Yes, but it differs for undergraduate, postgraduate students, and from campus to campus. Please refer to section 13 of the information booklet on the website http://admissions.nid.edu for detailed information.

Q. Will students be assisted with out of campus accommodation?
A. NID does not assist students with seeking any out of campus accommodation. Students are required to arrange their accommodation outside of campus on their own.

Q. Are there any special arrangements for international students?
A. NID does not differentiate between Indian and international students. The rules of residence are the same. Please refer to section 13 of the information booklet on the website http://admissions.nid.edu for detailed information.

Q. What are the provisions & facilities provided in the hostel room?
A. Provisions include a bed, a desk a chair and storage space for each student. Students are expected to arrange for their own beddings and other items of personal use.

VISA

 

Q. Will an Indian citizen who studied in Riyadh from class 9 to 12, be considered an overseas/foreign student?
A. Foreign nationals (applicants holding citizenship of any country other than Republic of India) only are eligible to apply under the Overseas category.

Q. When applying from Abroad, which visa is applicable to attend the Design Aptitude Test?
A. You will need a tourist visa. However, please check with the Indian Embassy in your domicile country for specific visa requirement, for entry to India.

Q. If one has a US passport and an Indian PIO card and has done their schooling from India, is she eligible to apply as an Overseas Candidate, Indian candidate or both?
A. Foreign nationals (applicants holding citizenship of any country other than Republic of India) only are eligible to apply under the Overseas category.

Q. I have dual citizenship? How does that work in my favor?
A. Foreign nationals (applicants holding citizenship of any country other than Republic of India) only are eligible to apply under the Overseas category.

Q. What kind of visa do I need to study at NID?
A. A valid student visa for the duration of course at NID will have to be obtained by the candidate before the commencement of their programme.

Q. What if there is a delay in my visa process?
A. It is the candidates responsibility to obtain a valid visa before the commencement of course.

NID VIJAYWADA

Q. Why is the programme offered at NID Vijayawada a ‘Graduate Diploma Programme in Design’ instead of Bachelor of Design?
NID Ahmedabad is declared as an Institution of National Importance by NID Act 2014. Once NID Vijayawada is covered under Government notification, students of NID Vijayawada will also be awarded for B.Des degrees. Prior to the NID Act, NID Ahmedabad was also awarding GDPD. MISCELLANEOUS

Q. Is there any stipend paid to the M.Des. students?
A. NID does not provide any stipend to students enrolled on its B.Des. or M.Des. programmes.

Q. When does the academic year begin?
A. The Academic session of NID commences in the month of July.

Q. Do I get an acknowledgement on submission of my application?
A. Yes, you will receive an acknowledgement by email on the email id you used during the time of sign up.

Q. Can I visit the campus and meet the faculty?
A. Campus visits are allowed from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 05.30 pm. You can seek an appointment with
faculty based on their availability.

Q. Can I withdraw my application? Would the application fee refunded?
A. You cannot withdraw your application once it has been submitted. The Application fee is not refundable or transferable.

Q. Can I join a post graduate course in a different college in India or overseas after NID?
A. Yes.

Q. I have heard of the exchange student programme NID offers, can I get more information?

Q. Can I get credit for other studies I’ve done?

Q. Can I join NID halfway through the course?
A. No.

Q. Do recommendation letters help in any way?
A. Recommendation letters are not entertained or accepted. Any attempt to influence the management and employees of the institute will lead to the automatic disqualification of the candidate(s).

Q. Is there a special provision of medical facilities for International students?
A. No. Doctors appointed by NID, are available on campus during weekdays.

Q. Does NID admit a fixed number of students from each country?
A. Foreign Nationals applying under the Overseas Category are selected on merit and their performance during all the three stages of the admissions process. There is no discretion according to country.

Q. Do I need to submit mid-year grades as well as final year grades?

Q. Do I need to take the English proficiency test?
A. Candidates are not required to take any English language proficiency test. However the medium of instruction at NID is English. The DAT and other tests will also be conducted in English.

Q. Will I need to have my school documents translated if they are completed in my native language?
A. Yes.

Q. Does NID have a four-year B.Des course in Interior Design?
A. NID offers a 4 year undergraduate programme in Furniture & Interior Design only. A separate course on Interior Design is not offered.

Q. Is the Master of Design a residential course?
A. Please refer to Section 13 on residential facilities in the information booklet available at admissions.nid.edu

Q. Does the Ceramic & Glass discipline teach pottery?
A. Yes.

Q. Which courses are offered at which campus?

Q. What are the credentials after completing a course?
A. You will receive a degree – Bachelor of Design or Master of Design (excluding the Graduate Diploma Programme in Design offered at NID Vijayawada) if you have studied at NID’s campuses in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar or Bengaluru.

Q. What are the age criteria for applying for M.Des?

Q. Is the foundation programme for B.Des. mandatory?
A. Successful candidates admitted to NID’s B.Des. programme will have to undergo a mandatory foundation programme of one (1) year duration. Allotment of a discipline of choice at the end of the foundation programme is based solely on the student’s performance and on the number of seats available in the desired discipline.

Q. What is the medium of instruction at NID?
A. English only.

Q. Can I apply for more than one discipline?
A. Yes. You can apply for not more than 2 disciplines for entry to a Masters programme.
