IIAD’s faculty members are experienced educators and practitioners with strong industry affiliations. They bring their research and expertise to impact students’ learning, both inside and outside the studio. Students are also supported by a diverse body of professionals who are committed to making their entire educational journey from induction to graduation, a seamless experience.
Prof. Usha Nehru Patel
Dean – Academics
With a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and Graphics, Professor Usha Nehru Patel received a Certificate in Higher Education in the U.K. and a degree in Fashion and Styling from the Netherlands. Her diverse experience in fashion and textiles has led her to teach and conceive art and design curricula at multiple institutes in India. Among other laudable achievements, she has led a challenging international project titled ‘Sustainability and Equitable Development: Interventions in India’s Rural Craft Industry’. Through this effort, she came into partnerships with Northumbria University in the U.K. and Dastkar, an Indian craft NGO. Usha has also headed the prestigious Delhi Metro Uniform Design project, designing all its eighteen categories of uniforms. She was additionally invited by the Ministry of Oceanography, New Delhi, to conceive and visualize an exhibition on this subject at the capital’s India International Centre.
Course Leader – Interior Architecture and Design
With over 38 years of experience in the field of architecture and design, he also has over 30 years of experience as an academician. A graduate in architecture from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, he went on to do a post-graduation as an Inlaks Scholar from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, U.S.A.).
He has taught as an Associate Professor and later Visiting Faculty at the School of Planning and Architecture, TVB School of Habitat Studies, CEPT University Ahmedabad, KVRIA Mumbai, PVP College of Architecture Pune, Sushant School of Art and Architecture, Gurgaon.
He has been an External Examiner, IAD at Pearl Academy for the last 4 years. He has also been a member of the Academic Council of SPA Vijayawada, and an academic advisor to IES College of Architecture, Mumbai.
Course Leader – M.A Fashion Design
With nearly 25 working years behind him, Gunjan Arora has practiced design across the genres of mainstream Fashion, Costume design, Textile art and being an Educator . An alumna of NIFT (Delhi), he has had the privilege to parallelly tread various paths that collectively speak about his belief that “design should solve many purposes”. He has his own label, that retailed globally, which spoke about his strength and command over textile and textile practices. As a Costume designer, Gunjan has been the mind and hand behind films like “Haider”, “Dear Maya” and an Opera staging John Adams adaptation of “The Flowering Tree”.
Course Leader – Communication Design
Aarti Uberoi is a multi-disciplinary design practitioner with over two decades of experience as a consultant, academician and entrepreneur. An alumna of Massey University, New Zealand and NIFT, New Delhi. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from Nottingham Trent University, UK. She has worked on projects ranging from illustrations to installations, with both small and large scale business in New Zealand. In India she has worked on multiple campaigns and product development for social innovation and sustainability for Development Alternatives, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) sponsored, Ogaan, and TBZ amongst many others. She co-founded a multi-disciplinary design consultancy N’visage Design consultants and an entrepreneurial venture ‘Twoforjoy’.
SUNITA GUPTA KONWAR
Course Leader – Fashion Business Management
Dr Konwar has over 30 years of experience in teaching. She completed her PhD in Economics from Mumbai University and thereafter headed the Department of Economics at a college in Mumbai University. She went on to work as Dean PGDM with IILM-Management Institute at Lodhi Road. From 2010 till 2018 she worked with Pearl Academy taking care of courses like MA in Fashion Marketing and BA in Fashion Business Management. She was also heading the CSR department at Pearl Academy. Dr. Sunita holds a distinction in PG certificate in higher education from Nottingham Trent University.
Course Leader – B.A. Fashion Design
With 25 years of experience as a designer and educator, Saumya has advocated slow conscious living and conservation of indigenous cultures in her classroom, at global conferences and as a TEDx speaker too. As the founding course leader of the Fashion department at IIAD, she is committed to creating an inclusive, rich learning environment with diverse viewpoints, talents and experiences. An alumna of NIFT (Delhi) and NTU (UK), she has the unique experience of setting up design departments of NIFT Chennai, Pearl Academy Noida and IIAD Delhi.
As the co-founder of Zameen Astar Foundation (ZAF) she is creating livelihood for Shershabadi community and conserving their craft of quilted textiles called Kheta. Her on-going research has been published and presented at multiple internationally acclaimed forums.
Course Leader – Foundation
A firm believer in the potential of Design and Creativity education, Prachi Mittal is a designer, educator and researcher. Her 20 years of industry experience spans across product design, social design, publication design as well as the business process of design. An Accessory Design graduate from National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, she is also armed with a PG certification in higher education from Kinston University, London. Her experience as a product designer spreads across a diverse range of lifestyle products where she has been commissioned to institutionalise design as a business strategy in various industry set-ups.
